Femina Potens presents ‘UNVEILED Women & Power In The Middle East’ visual art exhibit exploring the themes of identity, politics, violence, sexuality and feminism within eastern culture. Treasure and support three unbelievably talented artists who all have roots in the middle east and currently live in the west, as they powerfully address the intersection of power, politics and personal history through their unconditional respect and regard for feminist artwork within a complicated culture. Artists Cassell, Roxy Farhat, and Najva Sol address these prevalent and omnipotent issues through their work. Join us to pay tribute to the ‘UNVEILED Women & Power In The Middle East’ visual art exhibit Opening Reception and Artist Talk on November 5, 2010 at 7pm – 10pm. Avery Cassell‘s work explores themes of sex, transcendence, politics, violence, power and feminism. It is both narrative and autobiographical, and Avery has been working with these themes since 1986. Avery’s current work is heavily influenced by their time spent living in Iran, and addresses the intersection of politics, power and personal history.
Roxy Farhat – Roxy Farhat works with video and performance, creating political satires in the form of music videos. She often makes use of the simple language of popular culture to provoke complicated issues such as ethnicity, gender and the image of the other. Humor is an important element of her work, using it as a tool to disrupt our emotional responses to conventional myths and stereotypes in society. Her work has been shown in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Cape Town, Santiago, San Francisco and Oakland. Farhat was born in Tehran, Iran in 1984 grew up in Sweden, and is currently pursuing her MFA in New Genres from UCLA.
Najva Sol is Brooklyn & San Francisco based artist of all trades. Among her inspirations are glitter, adventure, scandal, and smut. For fun, she co-runs an art collective in NYC called “The Lowbrow Society for the Arts” which hosts carefully curated down + dirty art parties, free swaps, and subway parades. The Lowbrow Society has been mused about in The Village Voice, NY Press, Time Out New York, Gothamist, Nerve.com, and others. Her work was most recently featured in the “Little Prints” show at the SF LGBT Center as part of the National Queer Arts Festival.
